We help publishers craft series of compelling editorial features for magazines (digital and print) focused on technology, business, travel, and culture. Our high standards are rooted in rigorous training, and seasons of experience, in journalism.
With a reverence for tradition and a thirst for innovation, we're drawn to various methods and styles. We're equipped to quickly identify and address the needs of each publication and piece. We believe in the editing process, in authenticity, and in showing rather than telling (or selling). And we take pride in the results.
From strategizing through publishing, here's how we help our clients
Content development and story approach guidance
Assignment, line, and copy editing, as well as proofing
Editorial-calendar and freelance help oversight
As a magazine journalism student at Northwestern University's Medill School during the initial Internet boom (and bubble), Eclectic Editing founder Zoë Slocum interned at two publishing startups: college newspaper wire service UWire and business magazine Fast Company. The experiences cemented her interest in content management and features editing.
Just after the bubble popped, Zoë joined travel startup Smarter Living, now called Smarter Travel Media and owned by TripAdvisor, where she edited columns and managed databases of last-minute airfares, frequent-flier miles promotions, and cruise deals. She loved working with fellow travel enthusiasts while creating efficiencies, but she yearned to return to journalism. And the West Coast was calling.
Over nearly a decade at CNET, now part of CBS, Zoë rose from copy editor to copy chief and Blog Network manager. As she worked closely with reporters, editors, freelance contributors, designers, engineers, product managers, HR specialists, accountants, and attorneys, she most enjoyed collaboratively crafting many of CNET's award-winning investigative features.
At digital-marketing startup Ready State, Zoë worked with a colleague from CNET to develop a digital magazine focused on consumer cybersecurity and privacy. She shepherded a team of freelance writer-editors for Airbnb's rapidly evolving Experiences product. She edited features for clients ranging from Intel to Hewlett-Packard to Founders Circle Capital. And she developed the agency's own blog.
In 2017, Zoë decided to bring her favorite aspects of each of her experiences to her own startup, Eclectic Editing. And here we are.
We're in the Presidio, a national park known for its historical U.S. Army buildings, natural beauty, and proximity to the Golden Gate Bridge.
